Information for 8th Grade Students (and Parents)

Entering high school is a wonderfully exciting time, but it can also be a time of much anxiety. Hopefully, this document will answer many of the frequently asked questions and ease your nervousness.

Just exactly how do I plan my Freshman schedule?

To begin the actual scheduling process, all 8th grade parents will be invited to attend Forest’s “Middle School Parents’ Night” on Tuesday, April 3, 2007, 6:30 PM in the Forest Auditorium. Invitational flyers will be going to the middle schools for distribution.

After that meeting, the students attending Forest High School’s feeder middle schools will receive a schedule request sheet from Forest for each student. Students will be asked to take those forms home so they can plan their schedule choices with their parents. The forms are to be returned to the middle school, and the middle schools send them to Forest for review and data entry. It is imperative that these schedule request sheets are returned to the middle school by the deadline established in order for the student to have a schedule at Forest on the first day of school.

Forest High School counselors will go to each middle school in the spring to meet with the students. The scheduling process and curriculum will be discussed so that all questions can be answered prior to the students finalizing their schedule choices.

 
 

What courses are required for Freshmen?

All freshmen will be scheduled into four required courses:

  1. English I
  2. Algebra I
  3. Integrated Science
  4. HOPE (Health Opportunities in Physical Education)

To complete the six period schedule, the student and parent are required to select the other two classes:

  1. One class in the student’s “major” area of interest
  2. One elective—this could be two semester courses or one full-year course.


What about Honors classes?

Personnel at Forest and the middle school will refer to the honors eligibility criteria to determine course level. The criteria are as follows:

  • Grade of A or B in preceding subject area course
  • FCAT level of 3 or higher in the corresponding subject area.

The schedule sheet will have a place for the parent to sign if they do not want their child in the honors curriculum.

What is a credit and a GPA?

All high school courses carry credits. A full-year course equals one credit, and a semester course equals one-half credit. The GPA (grade point average) is determined by the grade earned in each course.
A= 4 points
B= 3 points
C= 2 points
D= 1 point

Honors courses award an extra point in the calculation of the GPA:
A in honors class = 5 points
B in honors class = 4 points
C in honors class = 3 points
D in honors class = 1 point (no extra points)


How many credits do I need to graduate?

There are 24 credits required to earn a high school diploma. In addition, all students must have a 2.0 GPA and passing scores on the FCAT.

Freshmen must pass all six classes to be promoted at the end of the year.


Is there required summer reading?

Yes. All entering freshmen must read at least one book over the summer and be prepared to test, discuss, and/or write a paper once school begins. The specific book(s) will be listed on the FHS web site in the spring and the information will also be distributed by the middle schools. Note: English Honors level students will have additional summer readings.

What is the first day of school and what are the hours?

The first day of school for the 2007-2008 school year will be August 20, 2007. School hours are from 8:45-2:45.


Where is the student drop off area?

Students are to be dropped off and picked up in front of the Auditorium.


Where do I go on the first day of school?

If you are coming from the middle school and turned in your schedule request sheet, you will need to find your name on one of the many lists of names posted all around the campus. Beside your name will be the room number of your first period class. At that point, you can ask one of the many adults standing around for directions to your first period class. Make sure you get there by the bell! If you do not locate your name on the lists, go to the auditorium for further instructions.


How do I get my schedule?

Your first period teacher will have your schedule and will go over it with you. Time is spent during the first period going over the campus map and figuring out where all your classes will be. There will also be plenty of time to ask questions. Don’t be shy!


When will I go to lunch?

Forest High School has four lunch shifts and students go to the cafeteria at the assigned time for whatever class they are in during the middle period of the day. All students must remain in the cafeteria area during lunch—Forest has a closed campus. Students may sit wherever they wish during lunch time.


How many classes do I have each day?

You will have three classes each day—1,3,5 on A-days and 2,4,6 on B-days.
The days alternate all year through. Each class is approximately 1 ½ hours long.


Do I need a book bag?

Yes, Forest students use book bags as we do not have lockers.


What is the dress code?

All Forest students are expected to dress appropriately for high school every day. The high school dress code is the same as the middle school’s dress code.


How many minutes are there between classes?

There are five minutes between classes.


What if I've just moved here and I haven't registered or picked my schedule?

Hopefully, you’ve been able to take care of registration and schedule planning during the summer. If so, you follow the first day instructions as above. If you have not, you must bring your parents with you on the first day of school. Parents are required to register their son or daughter prior to a schedule being prepared. You will need to report to the Auditorium.
