August 25, 2006

Dear Parent of a Senior,

Welcome to your child’s Senior year!  As the school counselor for the Class of 2007, I am aware of the anxiety you experience surrounding this eventful time.  As you and your child navigate through the world of college and career choices, application deadlines, college entrance exams and financial aid issues, I want to reassure you that I am here to help.  Beginning this week, I will be conducting on-going classroom presentations in all the Senior English classes to address the above items and much more.  Be sure to ask your student to share the materials I distribute. On September 21st the annual College Expo will be held at CFCC, and in late October, I will have an evening Financial Aid Information workshop for parents.  The Principal’s newsletter is a great way for you to stay abreast of these activities.

Throughout the year, I will spend a lot of time meeting with the seniors, individually or in group settings, to assist and guide them in their post-secondary plans.  As always, I remind you that appointments to discuss your concerns can be made by calling our Guidance Department Secretary, Mrs. Karen Ward at 671-4715.

A second concern, of equal importance, is for those parents with a student who may be credit deficient as the year begins or progresses.  Remember: there are strict criteria a student must meet in order to graduate with a State of Florida standard diploma.  These include 16 required courses, a total of 24 credits, a cumulative (9-12) 2.0 g.p.a. and success on the FCAT.  It is imperative that you maintain full, consistent and continuous vigilance over your child’s progression this year, or the consequences become sad and difficult when May graduation arrives!!  Forest High School sends an official grade report home every 4 ½ weeks, either through an interim or report card.  These dates are listed on page 24 of your child’s Forest High School student planner.  In addition, your child’s teachers can be reached via e-mail through the school web site http://users.mfi.net/forestFace-to-face or telephone conferences with teachers can also be requested from Mrs. Ward.

If you are unaware at this time of your student’s status, please contact my office.  Graduation requirements are listed on the back of this letter.  Various credit recovery options exist, but “time is of the essence!!”

I look forward to serving your family this year and anticipate a joyful celebration on May 19, 2006.

Sincerely,

Ms. Teri Strynkowski
12th Grade Counselor
