Freshmen Reid Shelley and Erin Jackson made only two mistakes in the year’s first meet held in October. They placed among the 139 highest-scoring ninth graders in the entire country, out of more than 60,000 students from 46 states who entered the meet. At the same time, sophomores Hank Goedert, Kyle Marques, Briana Tolbert, and Michael Totka, and seniors Diana Bennett and Brittany Fink all earned honorable mention in the meets for their grade levels. The school’s participation in the meet was overseen by Bessie Harmon. The texts for the first WordMasters meet this year were a short story by Tobias Wolff (for 9th and 10th graders) and an essay by Garrison Keillor (for 11th and 12th graders). The students will participate in three more WordMasters meets in the coming months and medals and certificates will be awarded in June to those who achieve and/or improve the most in the course of the year. This academic challenge is sponsored by EMIT.
