Library Media News

Marion County Library Media Specialists are excited to announce that Destiny (our electronic card catalog) can now be accessed from home. Students, teachers and parents are able to view and search their school library collections anytime, anyplace, and anywhere. Through interlibrary loan, resources not available from your own school library may be borrowed from other school libraries in the district. Destiny gives every classroom, every student and every home access to library resources at any time. Check it out at http://mymariondestiny.marion.k12.fl.us/.

  5. Play audio books in the car.
  6. Spend some one-on-one time at the book store.
  7. Build a reading activity into your daily routine.
  8. Plan to buy books for summer reading at our Spring Book Fair (May 22-23, 2008)

Challenge Day

Challenge Day gained national recognition after it aired on the Oprah Winfrey show. The Challenge Day program is designed to help stop the violence and alienation that youth face every day by tearing down the walls of separation, creating an environment of compassion, acceptance and respect. Through the workshop, teens gain the knowledge, leadership skills and personal growth experience needed to keep the Challenge Day spirit alive in their homes, schools and communities. By promoting self-acceptance and respect for others, the program helps to ignite participants’ passions and inspire them to take their positions as positive leaders of change. Supported by our school’s Be The Change Team, participating in Challenge Day is an opportunity for students to see the possibility of how things can be different in their school and their community. Youth and adults will leave Challenge Day inspired to make a change.

Studies have shown that after Challenge Day at the high school level, discipline referrals were reduced by 47%. Students must learn how to accept one another and treat each other with respect. An opportunity like Challenge Day trains the leaders on campus about diversity and acceptance and then places the responsibility on them to share the message throughout the entire campus.
