Cadet Chronicles

The Annual March of Dimes fundraiser will continue this month in AFJROTC. Our goal this year is to raise $2,000. We are doing this by collecting aluminum cans, conducting “Dime Wars,” and we will hold a Bowl-A-Thon in the near future. All proceeds from these events will help support those families with premature babies.

It was an early morning for the Drill, Color Guard and Rifle Teams as they loaded up on a charter bus and participated in the State competition in Tampa on Saturday, March 8th. Though our teams did not place in the top 10, we took an overall 12th place out of 23 other schools that were competing. Congratulations to all our teams and all those cadets that made this event possible. Keep up the good work!

On Friday, March 28th JROTC will hold our last Flight Challenge for this year. Our group will be traveling all the way to Grassy Pond Military Recreation Facility in Valdosta, Georgia. All the cadets will be challenged physically and mentally to see who is the top Flight, or class, by showing teamwork and dedication. Good luck to all of our cadets and the many challenges that await them at Grassy Pond.

The “Kick Butts” campaign is up and running. Our official kickoff will be on April 2, 2008. This is an annual event to educate the youth on the effects of using tobacco products. We will hold several contests such as classroom door, poster, and essay contest to further promote this event. Prizes will be awarded to each of the top winners in each event. Booths will be set up in the courtyard area with the information about the effects and risks of tobacco products.

Congratulations to the following Cadets on their recent achievements:

Megan Myers, Anthony Daly-Crews: Accepted to JROTC Honors Camp
Richard Thomas: Accepted to JROTC Honors Camp and Boys State
Diana Bennett: Appointed into the United States Air Force Academy
Daniel Guerra: Appointed to the United States Naval Academy

Upcoming Events:
March 28 Flight Challenge at Grassy Pond Military Recreational Facility
March 29 Silver Springs Trash Detail
April 2 “Kick Butts” Campaign
April 5 FL-931st AFJROTC Annual Game Tournament

WordMasters

Three students representing Forest High School recently won honors in this year’s WordMaster’s Challenge, a national competition for high school students requiring close reading and analysis of many different kinds of prose and poetry.

Sophomore Thad Kopec placed among the 213 highest-scoring tenth graders in the entire country, while junior Lauren Raetz placed among the 190 highest-scoring eleventh graders and senior Kyle Wall among the 227 highest-scoring twelfth graders.  More than 59,000 students from 46 states entered the meet.  The school’s participation was overseen by Bessie Harmon.

Movies @ FHS!

FHS Students are invited to a movie “afternoon.”  April’s showing will be Annapolis.  This is being brought to you by the NHS and will be held April 24 at 3:15 p.m. in the cafeteria.  Parents can plan on picking up their students by 5:00 p.m.  Snacks will be available (for a price).  The movie is free and all students are welcomed to attend – however, NHS will happily accept donations.
